Samsung Launches 200MP ISOCELL HP1, 50MP ISOCELL GN5 Sensors

Samsung has taken the wraps off the world’s first 200MP ISOCELL HP1 and a new 50MP ISOCELL GN5 camera sensor. Last year, the South Korean tech company announced a 108MP ISOCELL HM3 camera sensor for mobile phones. It arrived in some premium smartphones with amazing features such as enhanced auto-focus and likening-pixel binning. Now, the tech behemoth has upped the ante in the camera sensor segment by announcing a mammoth 200MP camera sensor for smartphones.

As mentioned earlier, the Samsung ISOCELL HP1 is the world’s first 200MP sensor that comes with 0.64-micrometer pixels. Aside from that, the company announced the 50MP ISOCELL GN5 sensor. It is worth mentioning here this will be the first-ever sensor to adopt an all-directional focusing Dual Pixel Pro technology. Furthermore, it is currently the only image sensor to have two photodiodes in a single 1.0-micrometer pixel. Last year, Samsung launched the ISOCELL GN1 with large pixels of 12 micrometers. The GN1 focuses on improving the overall dynamic photography experience.

Samsung ISOCELL HP1 200MP Camera Sensor Unveiled

On September 2, the company announced the 200MP ISOCELL HP1 camera sensor via a blog post on the Samsung Newsroom website. The company claims that the ISOCELL HP1 sensor is capable of capturing a significant amount of detail for sharper images even when they are resized or cropped. Furthermore, it is equipped with the company’s pixel-binning technology called ChameleonCell technology. The aforesaid technology determines the environment before using a full, four-by-four, or two-by-two pixel layout.

Moreover, the sensor can deliver 12.5MP images even in a dark environment due to its large 2.56-micrometer pixels by unifying 16 nearest pixels. The newly formed pixel can absorb more light and has higher sensitivity for crystal clear photos even indoors or in a low-light environment. On top of that, the new 200MP HP1 sensor is capable of recording 8K videos at 30fps. It brings the resolution down to 50MP or 8,192 x 6,144 pixels to capture videos in 8K (7,680 x 4,320 pixels) resolution without requiring to scale down or crop the image resolution. The Galaxy S22 series could debut the new sensor.

Samsung ISOCELL GN5 Sensor

In addition to the 200MP sensor, Samsung announced an ISOCELL GN5 sensor. The recently unveiled 50MP ISOCELL GN5 sensor uses the Dual Pixel Pro technology. For those unaware, it is an all-directional autofocusing technology. It adds two photodiodes inside each 1.0-micrometer pixel of the sensor. These photodiodes can be placed horizontally or vertically to identify changes in patterns in all directions. The sensor is capable of focusing instantly to deliver sharper images in bright, as well as low-lit environments.

The new 50MP GN5 sensor comes with Samsung’s proprietary pixel technology. This tech applies FDTI (Front Deep Trench Isolation) on a Dual Pixel product. Furthermore, the FDTI tech enables the absorption and retention of more light information. As a result, the photodiodes’ FWC (full-well capacity) improves, and crosstalk within the pixel decreases considerably.
